- Happy Xmas (War Is Over) was released by John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band in 1971. It begins with spoken greetings to their children; "Happy Christmas, Kyoko" (Ono) "Happy Christmas, Julian" (Lennon).
- Lennon & Ono rented billboard space in 12 cities: "WAR IS OVER! If You Want It – Happy Christmas from John & Yoko".
- The single reached #4 in the UK in 1972 and then #2 after Lennon's death in 1980.
Although the Beatles released a series of recorded Christmas messages on flexi-disc to their fan club members during the 1960’s they can only be described as skit rather than song based in nature. They have their place but nothing can beat the glow of a professional Christmas recording. For that we have to look at the Beatles solo careers, with Paul McCartney and John Lennon offering the prime seasonal cuts. John Lennon’s (co-written with his wife Yoko Ono) ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ has been a Christmas perennial since its release in 1971. The single was produced by Phil Spector and featured the Harlem Community Choir on backing vocals giving it such a singalong quality. It was written as an anti-war statement and released in tandem with Lennon sponsored billboards denouncing war in several large cities around the world. This being the early 1970’s the single was released on vinyl so it came with a flipside called ‘Listen, the Snow Is Falling’. This time Ono took the lead vocals and while it is initially a tad eerie sounding it does reveal itself to be of the lost classic type of Christmas song.
‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ was John Lennon’s first and last venture into the Christmas market, no matter how many times we wish ‘Cold Turkey’ was another one.Author: Kevin
