Andrea Bocelli is one of the world’s greatest living tenors and with a sweeping catalogue of studio albums it was only a matter of time before the Italian turned his attention to the Christmas season. And the exquisitely produced 'My Christmas' duly arrived in time for Christmas 2009. Against a backdrop of multiple worldwide promotional campaigns, including TV appearances on the public networks in the US, and an exalted producer in David Foster 'My Christmas' sold a couple of million copies in 2009 alone, which is a startling statistic given that it was only released in early November of that year. The song's only original tune 'God Bless Us Everyone' further boosted awareness as it was included on the soundtrack to the 2009 Jim Carrey animated movie 'A Christmas Carol'.

The opening salvo on ‘My Christmas’ has Bocelli giving Bing Crosby’s most famous song ‘White Christmas’ a gentle retelling, that’s if a powerful voice like his could ever create a sense of serenity! The music for its part is unobtrusive but at the same time displays a svelte nous. And that latent power finally breaks loose on ‘Angels We Have Heard on High’ where it feels as if the heavens have opened up with Andrea offering the celestial proclamations. While ‘My Christmas’ was never going to be anything other than a Andrea Bocelli show there are several tracks on ‘My Christmas’ where the tenor is joined by another vocalist. The appropriately chosen Natalie Cole (it was her father Nat that made this song the Christmas powerhouse it is today) adds genuine authenticity to ‘The Christmas Song’ while displaying a soft sense of swing that even comes close to approaching pop. There are less surprises on Bocelli’s song with Mary J. Blige with ‘What Child Is This’ rarely departing from its intended religious tone. It still sounds remarkable and worked well as the lead single to promote the album. With ‘Adeste Fidelis’ following it up ‘My Christmas’ reaches for the expected crescendo on a song that truly needs grandiose vocals to reach its potential.

And just as you feel this album is about to turn all grown and serious the Italian tenor throws a curveball by bringing the Muppets on board for ‘Jingle Bells’. It is far from the most accomplished piece on ‘My Christmas’ but as a conduit for lightening the mood ‘Jingle Bells’ is perfect. There are times throughout Bocelli’s first Christmas album where he returns to his native tongue and the results are always beguiling. An undoubted highlight is his reading of the Italian carol ‘Caro Gesu Bambino’ (‘Dear Baby Jesus’) which while quite short reminds one of the true meaning of the season. Even better though and perhaps this albums finest moment arrives via another Italian Christmas carol called ‘Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle’ (‘You Come From The Stars’) which sees Bocelli swoop and soar before letting fly with series of remarkable vocal arcs.

Bocelli recorded 'Mi Navidad', a Spanish language version of 'My Christmas' that was released a couple of weeks after the English version and while it wasn’t quite as successful it proves to be a wonderful companion piece for those who can’t get enough of Andrea Bocelli over the holidays.

Blessings sent us from above
Guide us on our way
We raise our voice as we rejoice
Bow our head and pray
A miracle has just begun
God bless us everyone...
