Hark The Herald Pentangle Sings

On the face of it ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ might appear to be a bit of a stretch for a Christmas song but a cursory listen to its lyrics reveals a composition glorying in the birth of Christ. This 19th century carol was written by Christina Rossetti and given an air by composer Gustav Holst. It would be many years later before Pentangle band leader and folk practitioner Bert Jansch would take the carol to the masses in the shape of a 1974 one-off single which was produced by Ralph McTell. Jansch only included the first and last verse of the original carol but the sentiments remain and are beautifully rendered through Jansch's gentle playing and melancholy vocals.
