He's Also The Voice of Christmas

Blake Shelton has a couple of strings to his bow including a strong career as a country singer and a role as respected judge/coach on the popular talent show the Voice. Growing up in Nashville no doubt helped his cause but Shelton has risen steadily through the country music ranks with a string of successful albums. His connection with the season was initiated on a brief appearance in the TV movie 'The Christmas Blessing' in 2005 before he went into full blown yuletide appreciation on his debut Christmas album 'Cheers, It's Christmas' in 2012.

And Shelton didn't take any half measures in his approach for 'Cheers, It's Christmas' with plenty of heavyweight collaborators taking part on the epic 14 tracks. The album was recorded in Capitol Studios in LA with a full orchestra which lent itself to giving the album a big bold classic Christmas sound. Shelton’s mother Dorothy Shackleford let the cat of the bag when she said Shelton was not averse to listening to Christmas music all year long so his debut album had been coming for a long time. While over half of the material on 'Cheers, It's Christmas' is plucked from the small pool of perennial Christmas crackers Shelton does enough to stamp his own personality on them via his smooth vocal delivery. Where he succeeds even better though is in his collaborators which give the album plenty of variation.

Although 'Home' had already appeared on Michael Bublé's 2005 album 'It's Time' that didn't stot Blake from enlisting the Canadian superstar for a Christmased up duet version of this softly lilting song. With Bublé rewriting the lyrics to appeal to those of a yuletide state of mind this was a masterstroke by Shelton and marked one of a scattering of highlights on the album. Other headline names to get involved included Kelly Clarkson (on the wide-eyed 'There's A New Kid In Town'), Reba McEntire (for the home on the ranch sing-along 'Oklahoma Christmas') Xenia from Season One of the Voice and various members of the Shelton household including his wife Miranda Lambert. Miranda appeared on the album’s opening track 'Jingle Bell Rock' which set the giddy tone for the rest of the album.

'Cheers, It's Christmas' reached the top of both the Billboard Holiday and Country charts and Shelton was an ever present on TV promoting it. His own 'Blake Shelton's Not So Family Christmas' appeared in early December 2012 with guest appearances from all the stars of his album and a special appearance by Christina Aguilera. It included a claymotion section and a piece where Rudolph gets shot with thankfully hilarious consequences. Blake also made an appearance on Michael Bublé's TV Christmas special 'Home For The Holiday's' where the pair reprised their track together ‘Home’. In 2013 Blake was again making festive on TV for 'Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale' where he got into full festive mode dressing as a man-sized Elf!
