And Santa Thought He Was The Boss!

Factfile - Bruce Springsteen
  • Springsteen has only one official Christmas release; his version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town came out as the B-side to his 1985 single My Hometown.
  • Santa Claus Is Coming To Town was written John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie in 1934. Springsteen's release was a live recording of the Boss with his E Street band, taken on 12th December 1975 on Long Island, New York.
  • In their 2012 list of The Greatest Rock & Roll Christmas Songs, Rolling Stone voted Santa Claus Is Coming To Town in 4th spot.

The Boss, as Bruce Springsteen is known, has been an ever present on the music scene since the 1960's and his energy, talent and appeal remain undiminished many decades on. Here is an artist who was born to perform and with shows continually extending beyond the 2-and-a-half-hour mark he appears to have lost none of his enthusiasm. A perfect character for our favourite type of music then and on that score Springsteen doesn't disappoint because as soon as the season approaches his gigs start to fill with Christmas favourites. For all that only one festive tune has ever made it onto an official Springsteen release. 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' came out as the b-side to the 1985 single 'My Hometown' and it has prominently worked its way onto Christmas playlists ever since. The surprising thing is that 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' is a live rather than a studio recording but the gleeful interaction between the Boss and his E Street band makes up for the lack of gloss. Springsteen has been known to play 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' outside of Christmas time so we truly have a Christmas fan to rival even ourselves at Yuleplay. Outside of this slender back catalogue of Christmas material there are lots of bootleg recordings from Springsteen shows where he has covered traditional favourites. The Boss held several Christmas shows in the Asbury Park Convention Hall at the turn of the century and of these recordings can be sourced on the internet. The most well represented of these songs are 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)', 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town', Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight), 'Christmas Day', 'Deck The Halls' and 'Blue Christmas'.
