Yuletide Log On The Fire and Underwood On The Stereo

Factfile - Carrie Underwood
  • Carrie Underwood appeared on the Christmas 2007 compilation CD Hear Something Country with her version of Do You Hear What I Hear?. The song peaked at #2 in the US Adult Contemporary Chart.
  • The following year, at the invitation of Priscilla Presley, Underwood performed a virtual duet with Elvis on I'll Be Home For Christmas for the Christmas Duets album.
  • In the same year, Underwood released her Christmas EP as a bonus CD for her album Carnival Ride. The 5 tracks of popular carols / standards included the previously released Do You Hear What I Hear?.

Country singer Carrie Underwood is yet another graduate from the TV talent show production line (this time it was 2005’s American Idol) but unlike many of her predecessors and those who followed in her wake Underwood has proven that her popularity has staying power. Although she has yet to release an EP or album that is dedicated to the season she has still amassed over half a dozen Christmas recordings, the biggest collection of which appears on a special edition of her second album ‘Carnival Ride’.

The 2007 compilation ‘Hear Something Country: Christmas 2007’ was Underwood’s first dip into icy waters as her crystal vocals proved a perfect match for ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ With an album that contained a who’s who of contemporary country music stars like Kenny Chesney, Martina McBride and Alan Jackson Underwood's performance stood imperious. So much so that her ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ would be reissued for Christmas 2008 as part of a 2-disc holiday edition of her album ‘Carnival Ride’, which had come out the year before. All 5 festive tracks were religious in nature which was understandable given Underwood’s angelic voice. Opening with a modern reworking of ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ and ‘The First Noel’ that were both laid bare except for Underwood’s distinct vocals and a softly lilting piano. Nothing spectacular but a pleasant listen all the same. Underwood stepped up the quality on her reading of ‘What Child is This?’ which turned out to be an exercise in quietly executed drama. It sounds like something from another time and in many ways is made all the more timeless for this very reason. Final track ‘O Holy Night’ is as devotional as you’d expect but never quite captures the majesty of the proceeding track.

2008 proved to be a very busy Christmas season for Carrie Underwood, which aside from the holiday edition of her ‘Carnival Ride’ also saw her taking part in the ‘Christmas Duets’ project. This was quite a unique collaborative effort which twinned some of country music’s leading ladies with Elvis Presley’s vocals recordings from his holiday releases from decades earlier. As odd as this sounded Underwood’s ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ worked a treat with Elvis’ deep hangdog singing contrasting and complimenting the much higher pitched Underwood. The production was seamless and what sounded like a pretty outlandish concept on paper ended up being much better in practise.

Said the night wind to the little lamb, Do you see what I see, Way up in the sky little lamb, Do you see what I see, A star, a star, Dancing in the night,
With a tail as big as a kite...
