Factfile - Casting Crowns
  • Casting Crowns released their gold certified Christmas album Peace on Earth in 2008.
  • Peace on Earth peaked at #2 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart and was also the best selling Christian Album of the year in the US.
  • They refrained from using bells for the "peace on earth" refrain of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, opting instead to use the boys choir for the melody.
  • Peak positions of the singles in the US Christian chart: Away in a Manger (#7), I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (#3), While You Were Sleeping (#8), Joy to the World (22).

When Christian rock band Casting Crowns released a single called ‘I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day’ from their Christmas album ‘Peace on Earth’ album in 2008 it became their 8th U.S. number one and showed that their huge popularity was not going to be diluted in the least by making the jump to Christmas material. In truth ‘Peace on Earth’ played it very much to type with its 10 tracks focusing on religious as opposed to secular material. ‘Peace on Earth’ had plenty of original compositions to go with the expected updates of cherished carols such as ‘Silent Night’, ‘Away In A Manger’ and the aforementioned ‘I Heard The Bells On Christmas Days’. But Casting Crowns achievement was the ease with which they turned such hushed entities into epic sounding anthems. Mark Hall and his troupe never lose sight of the fact that these are songs of devotion however and while the assembled dynamics are big and bold the message is never lost.

On the album's quieter numbers like ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ is appears as if this grand old carol has been swept inside the structure of a simple Beatles ditty. Not only does this mean that fans of the band will be in raptures but it surely must rank amongst the most child friendly approaches to religious education there is. ‘Joy To The World’ is similarly tailored with pleasant chords and Hall’s rock star gravelly tones. And if that same voice does ever turn you off there are some pleasant breaks like on ‘God Is With Us’ when Megan Garrett takes over on vocals duties. On ‘Christmas Offering’, with its distinctive maudlin violin parts, Hall is joined by Garrett on vocals and it proves to be an inspired duet which takes the album off in another interesting direction.

In a world filled with formulaic remakes of the same old Christmas standards and overtly ironic twists on the songs we hold dear there was something refreshing about the way Casting Crowns played it straight on 'Peace on Earth' while still giving us inventive approaches to material that is sometimes overly familiar. None more so that the rich instrumental version of ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ which closes the album in a most beguiling of ways. As the waves and waves of strings build it is obvious that such a composition would find its natural berth as the curtain comes down on another Casting Crowns live performance. And the band would tour ‘Peace on Earth’ extensively on their ‘Casting Crowns Christmas Celebration’ which took in 14 cities in all around the U.S. throughout November and December of 2008.

Although not entirely Christmas orientated ‘Joyful Joyful’ from Casting Crowns’ 4th album ‘Until The Whole World Hears’ proved very popular on radio stations across the U.S. over Christmas 2010. It was based on an old hymn called ‘Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee’ and it certainly has all the hallmarks of an uplifting Christmas number that is joyful and triumphant in equal measures. Another crowning achievement from this special Christian band.

I heard the bells on Christmas day, Their old familiar carols play, And mild and sweet their songs repeat, Of peace on earth good will to men...
