Ditch The Lady For The Man In Red

Factfile - Chris de Burgh
  • A Spaceman Came Travelling first emerged on the 1975 album Spanish Train and Other Stories and then was released as a single in '76, '81, '84 and '86.
  • The '76 release went to number 1 in Ireland but failed to chart in the UK. De Burgh's view was that it's "much better to have a regular recurring song than a hit for three weeks".

Chris De Burgh scored an unlikely Christmas hit with an even unlikelier Christmas song thanks to 1976's 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' (which had originally appeared on the previous year's 'Spanish Train and Other Stories' LP) that manages to not mention anything particularly festive the whole way through. But it would take a very hard heart to completely discount it given how it has woven itself into the fabric of our list of favourite Christmas songs. There has been much speculation over the years as to who the spaceman in question is and suggestions have ranged from the baby Jesus to Santa Claus. It seems the former might be closer to the truth as De Burgh himself has explained that he saw the spaceman as akin to the star of Bethlehem leading the wise men to the newborn Jesus. The song certainly has religious overtures especially on the chorus where De Burgh delivers a bout of celestial harmonising.

'A Spaceman Came Travelling' has been re-released on several occasions throughout the years and is a staple on endless Christmas compilations which has ensured its longevity. De Burgh wrote and recorded a new Christmas song for his 2008 'Footsteps' album, which was also released as a single. Like De Burgh’s earlier Christmas song 'The Bells of Christmas' has a message of goodwill to all and while it may lack the uniqueness of its predecessor it is every bit as good as your average Cliff Richard festive number (with which it shares an uncanny likeness).
