When The Clocks Strike Twelve On Christmas Eve

Factfile - Coldplay
  • In 2000 they released a limited edition (1000 copies) 2 track EP, Mince Spies to their fanclub; the A-track was their cover of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
  • In 2003 they covered 2000 Miles by The Pretenders. It was the top selling UK download of the year.
  • In 2010 they released Christmas Lights which peaked at 13 in the UK and 25 in the US.
  • In the Christmas Lights video there are 3 appearances for Elvises, and across the top of the stage there is Latin text I Believe Elvis Yet Lives ("Credo Elvem Etiam Vivere"). The lyrics contain the line "Like some drunken Elvis singin' I go singin' out of tune".

While lead singer of Coldplay Chris Martin is at pains to stress that his band have yet to write a classic Christmas song even he might admit that they’ve come close on their one and only original to date. ‘Christmas Lights’ appeared as a single in December 2010 and is reminiscent of the trademark Coldplay sound with a hushed piano led opening before the tune flowers into something much bigger as Martin emotes on the joy and pain that the season ushers into people’s life’s.

Before that a 2003 cover of the Pretender’s ‘2000 Miles’ became the top download of the year in the UK. They didn’t change anything of note from the original but as is their gift they dispatched the tune with commendable sweetness. Coldplay’s biggest festive achievement is arguably their contribution to the ‘Maybe This Christmas’ compilation that appeared in 2002 when they were at their most popular (post ‘Clocks’). Their version of ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ is stripped back to its very core with Martin vulnerably exposed save for a twinkling piano. This is something that you should reserve for a late on Christmas Eve get together and while it is far from note perfect there is something entirely heart-warming about the band’s performance.
