In The Fa La La La La, La La La Land

The leap from a starring role on TV to the music industry is not always straight forward but for Demi Lovato it has proven to be a seamless manoeuvre. Lovato started out on the children's TV programme Barney and Friends (much like her long-time friend and former child star turned singer Selena Gomez) before moving onto more adult roles (including her place on the X-Factor’s judges panel) and becoming a fully-fledged pop star. And while Demi has released several albums she has yet to record a full length Christmas album. Her first Christmas song arrived in 2008 but has never been officially released. 'The Christmas Song' appeared on an online leak of a demo that had preceded the release of her debut album ‘Don’t Forget’. Lovato was only 17 at the time but her vocals on Nat King Cole’s classic sound like that of a much more mature singer. With sparse piano accompaniment Lovato’s vocals are given free rein to work their magic.

Lovato also recorded a cover of Paul McCartney’s ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ (wherein she added a space so it read ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’) in 2008 for Disney via their offshoot record label Hollywood Records. The cover was included on a Christmas compilation called ‘All Wrapped Up!’ that also featured the likes of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. On her rendition Demi swapped synths for guitar lines and added neat vocal harmonies to give this Christmas classic plenty of new personality.

The synthpop and beat heavy schtick of Demi's 'Remember December', from the 2009 album 'Here We Go Again', isn’t really about Christmas at all despite how much we wanted it to be. Just shows that it is indeed possible to have a song about the 12th month without mentioning the 12 days! Less than 2 years later however Demi was showing what an unstoppable festive force she could yet prove to be as she performed a dynamic version of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ at the White House Christmas concert in 2012. With a backing choir of dozens her expressive vocals made you forget, for a few minutes at least, that Carey’s explosive original ever existed.
