Maybe We Could Chill With Those Bells, Bells, Bells

International superstar Beyonce recorded her best Christmas material while a member of the all-girl group Destiny’s Child. It arrived in the shape of a 12-track 2001 LP called ‘8 Days of Christmas’. This holiday release was only one of 5 albums ever released by the supercharged group who scored over 60 million in sales over their decade and half career together. By the time the album came out in 2001 Destiny’s Child had become a 3-piece after internal struggles within the band had seen several line-up changes. With Beyonce Knowles at the helm and Kelly Rowlands and Michelle Williams providing more than able back-up this was the incarnation of the group that would see them go supernova all around the world.

While ‘8 Days of Christmas’ was never less than interesting it wouldn’t be the release to catapult Destiny Child to the top. That said Destiny’s child slick urban/R&B style gave old Christmas favourites such as ‘Little Drummer Boy’, ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ and ‘O Holy Night’ an effortless contemporary feel. There were also several originals on the album which each had Beyonce’s midas touch all over them. ‘Winter’s Paradise’ is perhaps the highlight, a song that surely could have pulled in the punters at any time of the year such is its honeyed chorus. ‘Spread A Little Love On Christmas Day’ is an equally impressive new addition to the Christmas canon, all glitchy thunderous beats and sucrose harmonies. To date the album has sold close to a million copies and was released in 2004 in a somewhat reinvented way with several unreleased numbers included on the package.
