You Weren't Expecting To Hear An Andy Bell This Christmas Were You?

Factfile - Erasure
  • Erasure recorded their Crackers International EP in 1988 which contained She Won’t Be Home (Lonely Christmas) and their version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
  • A 16-track album is in the works for Christmas 2013. Andy has commented that they have already composed 6 original tracks for the album. The album is being recorded at Vince's studio in Brooklyn.

One of the 1980’s most successful electro pop acts Erasure haven’t exactly set the Christmas tree on fire with their yuletide numbers, mostly due to the fact that they haven’t released all that many of them. The only chink of fairy light came in 1988 when their ‘Crackers International’ EP housed 2 Christmas numbers. ‘She Won’t Be Home (Lonely Christmas)’ was an Erasure original and is typical of their sound from that period. In many ways it doesn’t sound all that different from their multiple hits, lacking as it does a discernible Christmas sound. Hard to miss the Christmas theme in the lyrics however. Their cover of ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ was an altogether odd affair, originally sounding like an outtake from the marching monkeys in the Wizard of Oz it turned on a sixpence to resemble an Aled Jones pastiche. Not their most inspiring moment but not without its charms at the same time.

Looks like 2013 could be the year that Andy Bell and Vince Clarke turns their synths to the Christmas market with a 16-track festive album currently in the works with production by Richard X. According to tweets/interviews from the band the album will be a mix of original Christmas material and covers of traditional favourites. One new song that appears to have been recorded is ‘Blood On The Snow’ which sounds like it may be a million miles from their happier themes of yore.
