Plenty Of Songs Of Devotion From Faith

Faith Hill is a mega successful country artist who is married to another country star called Tim McGraw and has sold in excess of 40 million records. Her association with the season begun as far back as 2000 when she took on a Mariah Carey composition which had been adapted from a song that appeared in the movie ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’. With Carey running into a legal battle to get her own version recorded it would be Hill’s take on ‘Where Are You, Christmas?’ that would make it onto the movie’s soundtrack. And what a heartwarming epic it turned out to be with Hill’s strong vocals embellished with orchestral backdrops and uplifting percussion. It marked an impressive Christmas debut but 7 years would roll by before she was making merry again. This time it was a duet with Josh Groban for his Christmas album ‘Noel’. ‘The First Noel’ has rarely sounded like this as Hill and Groban’s harmonies gave the old carol a respectful but memorable outing in 2007.

A year later in 2008 Hill would go the whole way and release her own Christmas album called ‘Joy To The World’. The album’s main single was ‘A Baby Changes Everything’ which told the story of Mary and the birth of her baby, not quite an obvious retelling of the nativity but an interesting take all the same. For more conventional festive frolics Faith’s Christmas album also delivered in spades. Especially so on her grandiose rendition of the title track with a huge choir providing the backing vocals, church bells tolling all over and an orchestra pulling every sumptuous arrangement imaginable to enhance the piece. The contrast to ‘Joy To The World’ was supplied by a sombre ‘What Child Is This?’ which Hill delivered in a delicately low key way. For the most part though ‘Joy To The World’ is nimble footed and aimed squarely at those who like to gently party through the season. So her ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’, ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’ are jaunty affairs that never quite get too boisterous. Hill also does a neat line in carols, however, with her ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ being the pick of the bunch. So much so that it was released as a single in 2008.
