Turn Your Blue Monday Into A White Christmas With Fats Domino

Factfile - Fats Domino
  • When Fats Domino recorded Christmas Gumbo in 1993 it was only his 4th non-compilation for 25 years.
  • Fats' first language was French.
  • His awards have included Hall Of Fame Awards, Grammy's Lifetime Achievement and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986).
  • With over 65 million record sales, the only 50s rock and roll to outsell Fats was Elvis.

Best known to most for his phattest songs ‘The Fat Man’ and ‘Blueberry Hill’ it may have come as a bit of a surprise when Fat Domino dipped his toe in the Christmas music waters for the first time at a relatively late stage in his career in 1992. It didn’t seem to bother the irrepressible R&B man however that ‘Christmas Gumbo’ arrived over 40 years after he broke into the music scene. And scattered all over the 12-track wonder was evidence that Fats had lost known of his gusto. True the choice of instruments on occasion (the cheesy synths in particular) could be called into question but there is still a joyous swing to songs such as ‘Christmas Is A Special Day’ and ‘I Told Santa Claus’. Of the better known Christmas standards Fats also acquits himself brilliantly with his ‘Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer’ clipping along with the frivolity of a pre-Christmas Eve dry run (once again though the piece is hampered by the electro pianos which sound leaden at best).

The one song that was probably made for Domino was Charles Brown’s ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’ and it is on his cover of this song that the blues man sounds most at home. His intonation is perfectly suited to this lonely paean to faraway loved ones during the season.
