A Christmas Album For One Hundred More Years

New York Christian music artist Francesca Battistelli appears to have a deep affinity for Christmas. You can tell as much from a mere quick glance through her career to date which is stuffed full of festive singles, taken in the main from her 2012 album that is simply titled 'Christmas'. With 4 of her own songs making up the 11-track release 'Christmas' was a pleasant mix of the old and the new that were all delivered in an up-tempo jazzy style that might remind you of the classic Christmas albums of yore. Of the old songs Francesca stuck to the tried and tested standards such as 'The Christmas Song', 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' and 'Joy To The World' but she infuses these perennials with such enthusiasm you might be forgiven for thinking they were splendid new festive ditties. ‘The Christmas Song’ for example is so upbeat you can’t help but be swept up by its wide eyed enthusiasm for the season. Battistelli also has the chops to turn the normally reverential ‘Joy To The World’ into a contemporary sounding acoustic drama. In effect this famous carol become something that could be played all year round.

Of her originals 'Christmas Is' is perhaps the most ear catching as Battistelli runs through the typical characteristics of the season before finally exclaiming that Christmas is really about Jesus and not about shopping or stuffing oneself. 'You're Here' paints the world from the point of view of Mary as she tends to her newborn with all the anxiety and stress that went with bedding down in a stable. Another original ‘Heaven Everywhere’ is ever so thoughtful and full of delicate instrumentation and though the sentiments may be overly earnest on occasion it would take a heart of stone not to be entranced especially as the little drummer boy percussion kicks in.

'Christmas' was also released in a limited edition package which included a live DVD of Francesca singing her Christmas songs in Nashville at the Pepsi Studio Gallery. The CD of version of the DVD, titled ‘Christmas Live In Nashville’, surfaced in 2013 with one track that was not on the studio equivalent called ‘December 25’.

Whilst it was always going to be a challenge to live up to the highs of 'Christmas' Francesca made a darn good effort the very next Christmas when she teamed up with the Sidewalk Prophets for a rendition of Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas' for Christmas 2013. The collaboration which took its cues from the Drifters version rather than that of Bing Crosby appeared on the Sidewalk Prophets festive album 'Merry Christmas To You' and proved to be one of its highlights.
