The Gospel Truth About Christmas Courtesy Of Fred Hammond

Although he started his music career in two separate bands, the Winans and Commissioned, Gospel singer Fred Hammond has carved out an impressive solo career as a gospel singer with urban sensibilities. And that is the sound that you’ll hear on his Christmas album from 2001 ‘Christmas...Just Remember’ which has the unfortunate distinction of being released on 9/11. While the album makes no apologies in its overtly religious tones it had broad appeal for those into slick R&B turns. A further feather in its cap is the fact that Hammond co-wrote several tracks on the album like opener ‘His Name Is Jesus’ and closer ‘He Is The Reason’. Listening to both without the knowledge that they are taken from a Christmas album one could be forgiven for thinking that they are cuts from a Christian album released at any time of the year.

Thankfully ‘Christmas...Just Remember’ does have moments that are more akin to a seasonal sound like the Smokey Robinson number ‘Christmas Everyday’. Again Hammond offers a smooth delivery that could grace the coolest lounge on the run in to the 25th of December. While many of the tracks on offer are new or not that well known Hammond’s rendition of ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain’ should be enough to get casual listeners on board. All told ‘Christmas...Just Remember’ is perhaps a little lacking in the quintessential elements that make a great Christmas album but as an exercise in displaying Fred Hammond’s undoubted talents it does its job with distinction.
