Gaither Round The Yuletide Log

Bill Gaither has led the Gaither Vocal Band since its inception in the mid 1980's blending their signature Christian music sound with that of Southern Gospel. A perfect fit for Christmas music then you might think and you'd be right as 2008's 'Christmas Gaither Vocal Band Style' so vividly illustrated. Before that arrived however there have been plenty of live performances of Christmas songs by the band during their annual Homecoming concert series that includes lots of well-known musicians from the southern gospel genre. These concerts/live studio jams has been released on video and DVD each year since the series' inception in 1991 with several focusing exclusively on the season of goodwill. They are 1994's 'A Christmas Homecoming', 1996's 'Joy To The World', 2000's 'Christmas In The Country', 2001's 'Christmas...A Time For Joy' and 2006's 'Christmas In South Africa' and 'Homecoming Christmas'.

With the 'Homecoming' series providing the Gaither Vocal Band with plenty opportunity to flex their festive muscles it came as no surprise that 'Christmas Gaither Vocal Band Style' was such an accomplished affair. The 11-track album was a pleasant mix of new tracks written for the occasion and old favourites that we all know and love. All three new tracks, 'Christmas in the Country', 'Come and See What's Happenin’ In The Barn' and 'My Heart Would Be Your Bethlehem' were written by Bill's wife Gloria Gaither. Each has its own distinct take on the season from the true spirit of country to a more religious stance that makes you pause and think about the real reason we celebrate the 12 days.

The Gaither Vocal Band may not spent too long agonising over their cover selections with the usual suspects like 'Winter Wonderland', 'White Christmas' and 'I'll Be Home for Christmas' all rearing their heads. That said where the real magic occurs when you hear the group turn these perennials into something resembling their own likeness, with vocal harmonies and skilled musicianship being the order of the day. Winter Wonderland' is a case in point with gorgeous playing and vocal theatrics at every turn.
