You're Guaranteed Flowers & Football Tops When Glasvegas Come To Town

Apart from the king of Christmas Sufjan Stevens bands from the indie genre don’t go in for a continued yuletide presence. Funny then that a band who make the sort of wall of sound that Phil Spector would have been proud of appear to be building up a neat collection of Christmas songs. Glasvegas come from Glasgow and have been feted by the coolest independent magazines so isn’t a breath of fresh air that 3 months after their self-titled debut was released in 2008 they released a 6-song EP (5 of which were originals written by lead singer James Allan) called ‘A Snowflake Fell (and It Felt Like a Kiss)’. The title track took all the attention and while it may not be your archetypal Christmas number it certainly conveys the chill of winter. The Slowdive sounding ‘Please Come Back Home’ with distant church bells probably has the edge over the title track in terms of fitting the occasion a bit better, slightly better song too. The closing cover on the EP starts out like the most bedraggled version of ‘Silent Night’ ever recorded but it soon reverts to type as Glasvegas put aside who they are and offer up a wonderful homily to this age old standard.

4 years later in 2012 and Glasvegas released another Christmas song, this time a much quieter affair called ‘No Her, No Hymn’. The clever title was one thing but Glasvegas also recreated the sound of falling snow via a softly tinkling piano. ‘No Her, No Hymn’ is an humdinger from a band that seem destined to create lots of festive classics throughout their career.
