Duff Your Santa Hat To These Songs

Christmas albums have an unfortunate habit of turning up on artist timelines when they've hit a stalemate. When the creative juices have shuddered to a halt what better than to hit the world up with another round of festive covers. In Hilary Duff's case it was the opposite however as her debut album 'Santa Claus Lane' jumped headfirst into a pile of fluffy snow. It was an unusual tact but one that paid off handsomely for the Texas born singer/actress. Up to that point she had been best known for her role as the Lizzie McGuire character on the Disney channel show of the same name but ‘Santa Claus Lane’ proved she was an equally good music artist.

'Santa Claus Lane' was released in 2002 and featured Duff covering many of the classic festive staples we have grown to love such as 'Santa Claus is Coming To Town' (that borrows heavily from Bruce Springsteen’s version), 'Jingle Bell Rock' and 'Sleigh Ride'. While there is nothing particularly nuanced about Hilary's versions they are bright and breezy enough to fit onto any holiday party playlist. The album's title track was named after a lyric in Gene Autry’s old chestnut 'Here Comes Santa Claus' and is as poppy as you’d expect. It was used extensively to market the movie 'The Santa Claus 2' and was also included on its soundtrack.

'Santa Claus Lane' features guest appearances from Hilary's sister Haylie on 'Same Old Christmas' and Lil' Romeo gets involved on a beatastic rap song that was released as a single called 'Tell Me a Story (About the Night Before)'. In what was unlikely to have been her decision Duff also turned her hand to Wham's eighties classic 'Last Christmas' and Paul McCartney's much heralded/derided 'Wonderful Christmastime'. The album's other guest duet came courtesy of R&B singer Christina Milian on 'I Heard Santa On The Radio' which sounds like a girl group giving it Christmas socks.

'Santa Claus Lane' sold over half a million records and was reissued for Christmas 2003 with a bonus track called 'What Christmas Should Be' (boasting a great chorus and chiming bells) tacked on. In 2004 Hilary starred in an animated movie with sister Haylie called 'In Search of Santa'. Although it was not lauded by the critics we find it hard to resist anything involving the big man in the red suit. Seems Hilary is similarly disposed because in 2005 she performed the starring role in a TV Special called 'Dear Santa' where the wishes contained in several letters from children to Santa were turned into reality.
