If You Want Something A Bit More Godly This Christmas

Il Divo are a quartet of tenors that were put together by music impresario Simon Cowell in 2003. With their diverse nationalities (France, Switzerland, America and Spain are all represented) it didn't take long for the group to work their magic. And in 2005 the act turned their attention to the festive season with their release of 'The Christmas Collection'. With a reliance on the tried and trusted holiday perennials this album could have been more of the same but then operatic pop albums with a Christmas theme don't come around that often. And with a multi-national group you are always bound to get nice little surprises such as the Spanish sequences on 'White Christmas'. 'Over The Rainbow' might seem like an odd choice for a Christmas album but there is method to Il Divo's madness given that 'The Wizard of Oz' is an omnipresent on TV over the holidays. You could apply the same logic to 'My Favorite Things' (from 'The Sound of Music') which has been included on countless other Christmas albums by different artists. Il Divo included a rendition of 'The Lord's Prayer' to round off the album and while, again, it is not really a Chritmas song it does fit into the aesthetic of this album.

Where Il Divo really soar and offer a charismatic reading of the tried and trusted is on the sacred carols like 'O Holy Night', 'Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful)' and 'Silent Night'. 'Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful)' is particularly absorbing as it opens with a cappella which continues for the first verse before the string section kicks in. ‘Silent Night’ is also arresting for its simplicity and interchanging vocals.
