Justin Bieber is undoubtedly the biggest heartthrob in music in the second decade of the 21st century. His good looks and a slick array of pop tunes ensured that he has a near endless supply of both eye and ear candy. The Canadian singer established pretty early on in his career that his audience deserved Christmas material and they got their wish when in 2011 he released his first Christmas album ‘Under The Mistletoe’. It was only his second album overall but by 2011 Bieber’s star had risen to an extent where he was capable of attracting several superstar collaborators for ‘Under The Mistletoe’. Not that it needed all that much but the album was given a boost following Bieber’s appearance on the 2011 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade which is broadcasted nationally on TV in the USA each December 25th.
‘Under The Mistletoe’ is a lavish affair featuring a mix of mostly new Christmas songs written by Bieber and his team of songwriters and a scattering of updated standards. Bieber enlisted a who’s who on many of the album’s covers with Usher oozing cool on ‘The Christmas Song’. Boyz II Men do what do on the slightly diluted ‘Fa La La’ so thank the world for the appearance of Mariah Carey on Bieber’s rejingling of her ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, given extra Christmasness or in Bieber tongue ‘SuperFestive!’. In many ways it doesn’t sound that far removed from the original with Carey taking lead vocals before Bieber's lead vocals for a few verses. A definite highlight. ‘Drummer Boy’ (‘Little Drummer Boy’) is less successful but is certainly given a change in direction through its soporific beats and Busta Rhymes machine gun rapping. ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ sounds all the world as if it the Jackson 5 had been involved but it is all Bieber’s work save for several hooks taken from their ‘I Want You Back’.
And even though he was just 17 when ‘Under The Mistletoe’ was recorded Bieber indicated that one of the songs that appeared on the album (albeit a track on the Deluxe edition) had been on his mind as far back as 4 years earlier. His famous FLASHBACK tweet in October 2011 included a link to a live video of him as a 13 year old belting out Stevie Wonder's 'Someday At Christmas' and his note perfect performance illustrated what an impressive vocalist he had already become.
Many of Bieber’s originals on ‘Under The Mistletoe’ are acoustic in direction with his vocals very much the main attraction. He dispatches in a fashion not all that different from Bieber’s non-Christmas songs but that is not to take away from what is a very likeable record. Of the originals ‘Christmas Love’, (big single) ‘Mistletoe’, ‘Christmas Eve’ and especially the twinkling ‘All I Want Is You’ leave the biggest impression. As first Christmas albums go there are not that many that are as impressively assembled as ‘Under The Mistletoe’ and given its mega-selling success it is unlikely to be the last festive LP from the Canadian heartthrob.
