Christmas Music Playlists with Kate Bush Songs

It's In The Trees! It's Snowing!

Kate Bush certainly is her own woman, sporting a unique musical style she is responsible for some of the most arresting songs from the latter part of the 20th century. The English chanteuse mixes art with song to create an arresting experience that has not dated in the slightest since the height of her majesty in the 1970's and 1980's. And it was at the turn of the new decade (1980) that Bush first hinted at her love for the season when 'December Will Be Magic Again' was released as a single. Although it was never released on any of her albums its soft glory, a mix of chirping vocals and lilting piano, can be found on Elton John's 2006 compilation 'Elton John's Christmas Party'. The song was initially unveiled on a BBC Kate Bush Christmas TV special in December 1979, a broadcast that was notably short of festive ditties but marked one of the few occasions when the singer performed in front of the camera.

It would be many years later before Kate Bush broached the subject again and this time it took the form of a winter album in 2011 called '50 Words for Snow'. And while it might not entirely fit the archetypal notion of what a Christmas album should sound like it is a perfect addition to the December soundtrack. With several of the 7 tracks extending close to and beyond the 10-minute mark this was an album to immerse yourself in. Each track was aglow and in wonder of the mysterious character of those crystallised water flakes which might seem a bit pretentious but in Kate Bush’s hands it becomes a revelation. ’50 Words For Snow’ is an album full of wonder featuring snowman lovers, mysterious Yeti's, dogs named Snowflake, all dramatised via Bush's eclectic vocals intonations and her colourful and inventive music.

With vocals from her son Albert (‘Snowflake’), Elton John (‘Snowed in at Wheeler Street’) and a spoken word performance from Stephen Fry (‘50 Words for Snow’) the album offers plenty of variety but you could easily believe that this was just one long comfortable ode to the stuff that is intrinsic to the season we love. Bush had a hand in each of 4 videos made to promo the album, one of which 'Eider Falls at Lake Tahoe' takes one of the album’s tracks 'Lake Tahoe' off in unexpected directions through the use of a series of haunting shadow puppets.
