Just Perfect For My December, Your December, Their December

With the proliferation of TV talent shows there is now an established route to superstardom in the music industry. In many cases the winners enjoy an initial purple patch before disappearing into the ether but for some it is start of a genuinely successful career. Kelly Clarkson certainly falls into the latter category after winning the original American Idol contest in 2002. Her subsequent success has been extraordinary with many of her album's selling in the millions.

Kelly’s full length Christmas offering would take over a decade to arrive and this despite an album called 'My December' in 2007 which had nothing whatsoever to do with the season (it was released in June). Her first true foray into the season came on an album from the makers of the show that launched her. 2003’s ‘American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics’ contained a couple of covers by the singer with ‘Oh, Holy Night’ (without instrumentation) and ‘My Grown Up Christmas List’ (which was originally released by David Foster way back in 1990) offering plenty scope to dip her feet in the religious and secular sounds of the season. It would be a full 8 years before Clarkson would go festive again with the release of an iTunes session, coming out a couple of days before Christmas 2011, which featured her rendition of 'I'll Be Home For Christmas'. The longing sax parts prove a revelation in an otherwise stripped back production with Clarkson’s expressive vocals doing everything to colour the skeletal instrumental frame. By 2012 Clarkson's Christmas appetite really seemed to be reaching fever pitch as she duetted with country star Bruce Shelton on his album 'Cheers, It's Christmas' for 'There's A New Kid In Town'. The pair also performed the soft piano led song about the nativity on a Shelton Christmas TV special called 'Not So Family Christmas' in December of that very same year.

Kelly Clarkson’s debut Christmas LP finally arrived in 2013 and 'Wrapped In Red' proved to be a festive album par excellence. With a mouth-watering 14 tracks, which included 5 originals which were all co-written by Clarkson, this was a tour de force by the Texas native as she also sang all the backing vocals. ‘Wrapped In Red’s lead single was a cover of Irving Berlin’s most famous composition and ‘White Christmas’. Rarely has Bing Crosby’s signature tune sounded this sparkling, albeit with a simple piano accompaniment, with Clarkson painting vivid pictures of the Christmas’s we used to know. ‘Wrapped In Red’s main single 'Underneath The Tree' may not have been the chart success that was expected but it is altogether striking in its adherence to the classic Christmas sound (that of Phil Spector's signature 1963 festive album it must be said) with her booming vocals demanding we take note of her Christmas tale. It’ll be nice to watch it grow into something very special as the December's tick by. The title track (another Clarkson original) bore the same chops as ‘Underneath The Tree’ as it mirrored the sound of Spector’s girl band’s.

Although ‘Wrapped In Red’ is undeniably Kelly’s work she did pull in some friends on a couple of tracks which gives the album a nice counterbalance to her emotional outpourings. Country singer Ronnie Dunn joined her on a typically feisty ‘'Baby, It's Cold Outside’ and on closing track ‘Silent Night’ Kelly was joined by a pair of country greats Reba and Trisha Yearwood. The only curveball in the list of covers on the album is a reworking of Imogen Heap’s ‘Just For Now’ which was made a tad more festive friendly by a sizable nod to ‘Carol of The Bells’ throughout. ‘Wrapped In Red’ was heavily marketed on TV primarily on a NBC special called 'Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale' which picked up several million of viewers as did her performance during the Christmas concert at the Rockefeller Center in December where she performed ‘Blue Christmas’ and ‘Run Rudolf Run’.
