Chesney Roasting In An Open-top Hire

Kenny Chesney is one of country music's top stars with record sales well in excess of 30 million. His successful marrying of country and pop has proven to be endlessly popular especially as Chesney is known for a glint in his eye for mischief making. The Tennessee man had recorded several acclaimed albums before 2003's 'All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan', a contemporary twist on a formula that had previously seen requests for two front teeth and a hippopotamus, so his debut festive foray was much anticipated. Given that Chesney is known to favour spending the season in the Caribbean it probably made sense that he sip his egg-nog from the comfortable shade of a coconut tree rather an armchair beside the open fire.

Kenny's 11-track album featured guest appearances from Alabama's Randy Owen on Owen's countrified song 'Christmas In Dixie' and Willie Nelson for the duet of Nelson's 'Pretty Paper'. The latter was made famous by Roy Orbison and while his version is the one that remains the compilation makers favourite Chesney and Nelson recorded a very fine alternative. On 'Just A Kid' Chesney for once drops the humour and instead focuses on the nativity and the birth of Jesus. On this occasion he drift into Christian music territory with the instrumentation very much on down low and respectful.

'All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan' has a couple of originals including the giggly title track and the initially piano flecked but ultimately lighter in the air rocker 'The Angel at the Top of My Tree'. On the penultimate track Chesney was joined by his mother and her sister for a reverential version of 'Silent Night' which almost stretched to the 5 minute mark.

As you’ll guessed 'All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan' is not your average Christmas album, there are very few mentions of the staples such as snow and Santa and for these reasons it is a record to be treasured for those spending the season in hot climes. So for those who think that Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas' might seem like an odd bedfellow for Christmas dinner on the beach Kenny’s album is a ready alternative. We’re only disappointed about is that he didn't record an updated version of the Andrew Sisters 'Christmas Island'!

Kenny's only other foray into the Christmas market was his rendition of 'Away in a Manger' which was recorded in 1999 for compilation called 'A Country Christmas'.
