Taking You Right Into The Manger Zone

While you lose immediacy with original festive recordings it is hard not to respect an artist who makes an effort to add something new to a seasonal soundtrack that seems forever stuck in the same groove. And that's what rocker Kenny Loggins did for his 1998 Christmas album 'December' with a quartet of the 11-tracks being either written or co-written by the moderately hirsute musician. And with songs such as 'Danger Zone' and 'Footloose' to his name one might expect an album of festive treats to have a certain pep in its step. Quite surprisingly however 'December' does not fulfill its billing as a knockabout romp as it is quite melancholy in its approach. Not only that but many of the tracks such as 'Coventry Carol' (traditional), 'Walking In The Air' (Aled Jones) and 'Christmas Time Is Here' (Charlie Brown) perform a slow march that might not be such a good fit for a family gathering all set for party time.

What 'December' offers though is the perfect comedown after the intense highs that the season is best known for producing. At the time of its release in 1998 'December' was marketed as a romantic Christmas recording which lends itself to quieter alone time or with a loved one as the fire crackles in the corner. The music while never overbearing is a wonderful foil for Loggins gentle utterances and with each song seamlessly flowing into the next it makes for an album that deserves to be listened to as a whole. Kenny's originals stand up well besides the classics like 'White Christmas' and 'The Christmas Song' with the title track 'December', 'The Bells of Christmas' and 'Angels In The Snow' all offering his own brand of sentimental festive cheer. ‘The Bells of Christmas’ is perhaps the most affecting as a gentle piano backdrop colours Loggins sad memories of a season past. Another original ‘On Christmas Morning’ was co-written with David Foster and romantically conjures the feelings that everyone experiences on that very special morn.
