Not Exactly The Bells On Christmas Day

As lead singer/song writer with the Velvet Underground Lou Reed blazed a trail that stuck two fingers up at the mainstream. The band may not have been fully embraced at the time of the peak of their powers but albums such as ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’ have since been recast as the classics that they are. Following the breakup of the band Reed forged a very successful solo career which culminated in his 1989 masterpiece ‘New York’. Although this album is the last place you’d expect to find a Christmas song it nonetheless included ‘Xmas in February’, which is perhaps one of the bleakest festive songs ever written. This was a composition devoid of Christmas ornamentation and a lyrical theme that makes the point that fortune doesn’t always favour the brave (in this case it actually spits in its face). The song does boast a lone jangling guitar which if you were to block out the depressing tale of the returned Vietnam vet actually sounds quite tender on the ear.

10 years earlier in 1979 Reed recorded another quasi Christmas song for his ‘The Bells’ album. ‘All Through The Night’ showed no discernible sign of the season but includes the line ‘If Christmas comes only once a year, why can't anybody she'd just one tear, for things that don't happen all through the night’. The composition had Reed searching for meaning and a sense of humanity against a jazzy backdrop supplied by Don Cherry. In this way it was more Christmas spirited that we’d probably care to admit.
