Shake, Rattle And Roll This Christmas

Texas Christian Rock band MercyMe have been treading the boards with much success since the mid-nineties. They released their debut Christmas album 'The Christmas Sessions' in 2005 and supported it with a festive tour they shared with Steven Curtis Chapman who also released a Christmas album called 'All I Really Want for Christmas'. The previous year the band had tested the seasonal waters with a one-off single called 'O Holy Night' and its success meant it was included on 'The Christmas Sessions'. They had also recorded 'What Child Is This?' for the 2002 Christian artist compilation 'WOW Christmas'.

Although MercyMe's 'The Christmas Sessions' spawned several successful singles it was the albums one original 'Joseph's Lullaby' that left the biggest impression reaching number one in Christian charts. Focusing on Jesus' father and all the emotions he went through in the run-up and after the birth it offers a nice new insight on the nativity. And that song was the perfect taster for an album that had the expressed intention of ripping up the yuletide soundtrack rulebook. Not that you'd be surprised with songs like 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' sounding lively but who could have predicted that the normally choir based 'It Came Upon a Midnight Clear' becoming a genuine rock behemoth that could have easily passed for a U2 stomper such are its Edge like guitar licks. Charlie Brown's 'Christmas Time Is Here' is similarly upwardly noised so what was traditionally a soft piano led lament becomes a soft rock opera. Quite how the purists would take it is open to question but for MercyMe fans and lots of others besides it was manna from heaven.

Much of MercyMe’s sound rests on Bart Millard’s sweet vocals but the band bolstered their sound with trumpet, mandolin and trombone parts so that quiet old favourites sound a lot more upbeat. For example the band enlisted fellow Christian artist Amy Grant for 'Silent Night' and their version of this carol together is quite unlike many your will hear over the holidays. A lively acoustic workout is not something that you’d normally expect from this traditional Christmas album closer but it is MercyMe’s credit that it never sounds forced.

The mini medley 'Winter Wonderland/White Christmas' also works well with both songs twisted to resemble a rowdy lounge bar jam. It is fun escapism and will likely surprise and delight your festive houseguests especially when the big brass moments kicks in. The combination of these old favourites and their delivery is just one of many fine reasons why ‘The Christmas Sessions’ is sure to be a favourite over the holidays for years to come.
