Christmas Music Playlists with Metallica Songs

Goodbye Sandman, Enter Snowman

Heavy metal is not a genre of music you’d readily expect to throw up Christmas material and for the most part this rule of thumb applies. But then bands like Metallica are not your average run of the mill heavy guitar band having infiltrated the mainstream successfully on their 1991 ‘Black Album’. This is a band that is not afraid to experiment with their sound and the payoff was there for all to see on that multi-million selling classic.

Despite all this there is slim pickings each Christmas for Metallica fans. Despite what a lot of the internet says Metallica did not record a version of ‘Carol of the Bells’ with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, no matter how much you wished they did and how much it sounds like it could be them. All we’re stuck with is a profanity laden Christmas message from one of the band about their latest merch. It’s not ideal but then perhaps it was always going to be that way.

For those bent on hearing Metallica in a festive light there is plenty of solace to be garnered from a unique holiday album from 2007 called ‘The Holiday Tribute To Metallica…And Christmas For All’ wherein a tribute band known as Santa Claws And The Naughty But Nice Orchestra gave some of Metallica’s best known songs a Christmas makeover. So ‘Master of Puppets’ is transformed from a ferocious heavy metal stampede to a 70’s lounge classic with notions of egg nog. It is an altogether groovy rendition. ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ could for all intents and purposes be renamed ‘For Whom The Sleigh Bell Tolls’ such is its reconfiguration, the soundtrack to 'Home Alone' could have badly done with it. The greatest joy though comes via the change that takes place to Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ which is latterly bedecked in church bells and synthetic brass. It genuinely sounds Christmassy and not even the most ardent Metallica fan could turn it down on Christmas Eve.
