Michael Shows Us What Happens When A Man Loves A Season

Factfile - Michael Bolton
  • Michael Bolton's chief Christmas music output has been his 1996 album, This Is the Time: The Christmas Album, the 2002 Christmas EP, Joy to the World, and his 2007 album A Swingin’ Christmas.
  • Bolton's 1996 Christmas album This Is the Time peaked at number 11 in the album charts, has been certified platinum in the US & Canada, and has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.

If any artist can be described as being synonymous with the eighties (and a considerable part of the early nineties it must be said) it is Michael Bolton. With his giant perfumed hair and bombastic near screech of a vocal this was a singer who was never going to go unnoticed. And amid the number ones and bestselling albums Bolton showed a considerable affection for the season with several well received Christmas releases. The first of these arrived in 1996, the artwork of which showed a somewhat contemplative Bolton walking solemnly on a street bedecked in a light dusting of snow. And this image informs much of what you’ll hear on ‘This Is the Time: The Christmas Album’ where the previously unrestrained Bolton holds his emotions in check for much of the album. So ‘Silent Night’ shows a voice that is indeed powerful but rarely straining under the weight of the singer’s usual weighty outpourings. And much of ‘This Is The Time’ follows the same path with ‘Joy To The World’, ‘O Holy Night’ and his version of ‘White Christmas’ all given the soft Michael Bolton treatment. The album’s centrepoint comes when Bolton is joined by Placido Domingo for a moving duet on ‘Ave Marie’. For all the seriousness on show though there are still moments of levity when Bolton truly lets down his hair. His ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ won’t feature on many people’s choice for favourite version but it still manages to be a happy interlude. ‘This Is The Time’ features a couple of originals which appear at the tail end of the album. The title track is redolent of Bolton’s best work while the non-Christmassy ‘Love Is The Power’ would have served better as a hidden track that few had ended up finding.

Bolton quickly returned to the Christmas marked in 1997 but this time he was accompanied by Placido Domingo, Ying Huang and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on the live recording ‘Merry Christmas From Vienna’. This striking album is as impression as it sounds with Bolton only soloing on his respectful ‘Silent Night’ and a modern take on ‘Joy To The World’ with full choir backing. Elsewhere he again combines with Domingo for a live version of ‘Ave Marie’ which surpasses the studio version by some distance. All told ‘Merry Christmas From Vienna’ is a very credible entry in the yuletide canon and does not suffer in the least from being a live recording.

Michael Bolton’s next excursion into the season came in 2002 but rather disappointing it turned out to be an EP containing a selection of the tracks that had appeared on his previous Christmas album (the bonus track being ‘Georgia on my Mind’). The Michael Bolton that was to return to the Christmas fold half a decade later, in 2007, for ‘A Swingin’ Christmas’ was a radically different one. Whether it was artistic maturity or the plain old realisation that everything needs to change at some point Michael Bolton’s second Christmas was a qualified success. From the off ‘Winter Wonderland’ shows a singer with restraint on his mind and some laidback musicians helping colour the scene wonderfully for this much covered classic. The change in direction was probably precipitated by Bolton’s label of the time, Concord, which was noted for its jazz releases but Bolton takes to his new image like a duck to water. Over a mix of 10 covers of religious and secular origins Bolton gave an impressive account of himself with his ‘The Christmas Song’ and ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ taking home the garlands for the album’s most impressive moments. All in all it showed an artist willing to change his spots and in the process lose the mane.

Sometimes life leads you blind,
To the one you've been waiting to find, Sometimes life lets you see, Just how great the gift of love can be, Now the light that fires the brightest stars, Is waiting to shine on this moment of ours...
