Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Season’s Greetings From ‘N Sync

‘N Sync were a boy band from Florida that over a short career took to the hearts of an adoring teen market. Consisting of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass the boys only officially released 3 albums although they also recorded a Christmas album ‘Home For Christmas’ that was released in several territories. The slickly produced ‘Home For Christmas’ was preceded by the single ‘Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays’ which was written by various members of the band and presented the band’s slick pop within the environs of a festive team. Shorn of the usual Christmas trappings like church and sleigh bells this was not a million miles from the usual fare released by the band at other times of the year. If this development was a disappointment for fans expecting something more Christmassy sound then they needn’t have worry because right from the off 1998’s ‘Home For Christmas’ is bedecked in tinsel and eggnog.

‘Home For Christmas’s title track is a slow moving number, in an album full of them, which sets the scene on harmonies that always have December’s best days at their heart. ‘Under The Tree’ is an early highlight with its call and response vocals eventually breaking into a 5-piece vocal crescendo which ‘N Sync do so well. While the original material on ‘Home For Christmas’ is certainly worthwhile it is when the group moved onto more familiar Christmas standards that the album really glows. Their acapella cover of ‘O Holy Night’ is especially impressive and shows what had the marketing men so excited when ‘N Sync first emerged in the mid 1990’s. ‘The First Noel’ might sound a tad dated at first but as soon as the vocals kick in you know you are in the company of a classic rendition of a much loved carol.

Although it was only released in the United States ‘Home For Christmas’ did appear elsewhere with a slightly different tracklisting. The main territory to enjoy this reissue was Germany where ‘Home For Christmas’ was released in the run up to Christmas 1998 along with 6 tracks from their eponymous debut album ‘*NSYNC’ which had not been officially released there. It took until 2002 before the album surfaced in the UK as ‘The Meaning of Christmas’ again with a slightly altered track listing from the original. To date the combined sales of ‘Home For Christmas’ exceeds 4 million copies.
