Christmas Music Offering A Sleigh Bell-Free Zone
He may have straddled a host of different genres from country to pub rock, pop to punk but one arena that the irrepressible English singer/producer Nick Lowe has stayed away from is music of the Christmas kind (his solo LP from 1978 ‘Jesus of Cool’ did not touch on the season through its prism of irony). There was a brief brush with the colder part of the year on his contribution to Bill Kirchen’s ‘Shelley’s Winter Love’ but it hardly classifies as a Christmas number.
All that is about to change in 2013 however, 37 years after Lowe started out in the music business, with the arrival of a fully decked out Nick Lowe Christmas album called ‘Quality Street’ (named after a very popular box of chocolates that sells by the truckload each Christmas in the UK). The album has 12 songs and will feature 3 originals (one was co-written by Ry Cooder) and some neatly judged covers from the likes of Ron Sexsmith (‘Hooves on the Roof’ rather the more obvious ‘Maybe This Christmas’), traditional carol ‘Silent Night’ and that perennial Wizzard number ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day’. In a nod to the burgeoning event of ‘Christmas in July’ Lowe had ‘Quality Street’ stream in full for 24 hours on youtube on July 25th 2013.Author: Kevin
