While the multi-million seller singer of ‘Don’t Know Why’ hasn’t produced a Christmas album as of yet she has released a good deal of material for the season over the years, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other singers. ‘Peace’ on one of her earliest releases ‘First Sessions’ might not exactly be intended for the Christmas market but it has a wonderful Charlie Brown Christmas feel to it, no doubt triggered by Jones’ tender piano playing. Her first move into dedicated wintry territory arrived on her 2009 album ‘The Fall’ which included a song called ‘December’ which like many of her songs she wrote herself. ‘December’ is a delicate piano flecked affair with gentle acoustics and Jones offering a wonderful set of seesawing vocals.
The first of Jones' Christmas collaborations arrived in 2010 when she joined country legend Willie Nelson on the Frank Loesser classic ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ for Nelson’s album ‘American Classic’. While on the face of it they may seem like an odd pairing for what is a somewhat risqué duet the chemistry still sounds authentic. The stripped back acoustic nature of the arrangement contrasts Jones fluid delivery with that of Nelson’s more straight laced approach. The following year in 2011 Norah Jones was again in Christmas duet territory when she joined Cyndi Lauper on the title track of her ‘Home For The Holidays’ album. Again it was Jones’ voice that shone through, offering a nice balance to Lauper’s slightly weathered delivery.
In 2012 Norah Jones released a free Christmas single via iTunes. ‘It Came Upon A Midnight Clear’ was a pristine take on the classic carol with little apart from a lightly strummed guitar and sparse piano keys distracting from Jones’s immensely soulful singing.Author: Kevin
