Prayin' For Christmas Morning Daylight

Although country pop band Rascal Flatts have yet to fully embrace the season of goodwill with their own album of festive material they have dabbled in tinsel led numbers as far back as 2001, just a year after they were formed. The band's debut Christmas recording was a cover of the age old carol 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' for a compilation called 'No Wrapping Required: A Christmas Album' wherein the cream of modern country music updated lots of old Christmas classics. Joining Rascal Flatts on the album were such country luminaries as Shedaisy, Ricky Skaggs and Aaron Tippin who gave some of the best known traditional tunes a modern slant.

It was not until 2008 that Rascal Flatts returned to the season, this time as part of a special limited release of their 'Greatest Hits, Volume 1'. The additional tracks for this release were all Christmas covers but their renditions of 'I'll Be Home for Christmas' (for which they recorded a music video), 'White Christmas' and 'Jingle Bell Rock' were all unique in their own way. 'I'll Be Home for Christmas' for instance was recorded acapella and the absence of any instrumentation did little to dull its resonance. ‘White Christmas’ on the other hand comes across like a brilliant boy band ballad, a re-imagination that might have had Bing himself smiling were he still around.

For Christmas 2009 Rascal Flatts offered up a free gift to their fans in the shape of a rendition of 'Away In A Manger' which was also marketed to radio stations around the globe. The free mp3 download of this cherished Christmas carol was available to download from the band’s website all over the holidays that year. Although it laid on the syrup quite heavily it was a boon for fans of the band who had now become used to a Christmas release from their idols every few years.

The band released ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ as a single in 2011 and was featured on the Special Olympics charity compilation 'A Very Special Christmas: 25 Years Bringing Joy to the World' for Christmas 2012. This modern carol was only written in 1984 but has amassed an army of artists who have been enamoured enough to record it in the intervening period. Rascal Flatts powered on the balladry to give the song a real lighter in the air quality that should ensure there isn’t a dry eye in the house by the time Santa arrives.
