Christmas Music Playlists with Relient K Songs
Merry Christmas, Here's To Many More
Now we know the Pretenders come from that neck of the woods but Ohio does not appear to be America's greatest supply chain for breaking bands. To draw a line under it at Chrissie Hynde and pals would be a mistake though because Relient K have left a pretty big impression in the Christian Rock arena (they are signed to Tobymac's Gotee record label) as well as scoring a number of Top 20 albums in the mainstream Billboard charts. Like fine wine this is a collective that seem to get better with age.
Relient K's first Christmas album 'Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand' came out in 2003 was released in conjunction with their previous LP 'Two Lefts Don't Make a Right...but Three Do'. This 10-track album was for the most part an expression of Relient K's view of how the Christmas standards should sound although leadman Matt Thiessen did write an original called 'Santa Claus Is Thumbing to Town'. This composition had previously appeared on a 2001 compilation called 'Happy Christmas, Vol. 3' and his 'I Celebrate The Day' would appear on the subsequent edition of the series 'Happy Christmas, Vol. 4'. Thiessen's only other original on the album was 'I Hate Christmas Parties' with trademark piano led opening and lyrics that reveal the cause of the aforementioned hatred.
For the most part Relient K play it light and airily with plenty of good humour thrown in for good measure. On occasion they sound like other bands, especially so on opening track ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ which all the hallmarks of Coldplay. In 2006 one of the choice tracks from 'Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hand', the punk infused 'Twelve Days of Christmas', appeared on the massively successful franchise 'Now That's What I Call Christmas!'
Relient K's second Christmas album, 2007's 'Let It Snow, Baby... Let It Reindeer', contained everything from their debut Christmas album and over half a dozen new Christmas recordings. The song order was rejigged to accommodate the new tracks so it has the feel of a brand new addition to the yuletide roster. This time Thiessen was even more prolific and turned out great new originals in the shape of 'Merry Christmas, Here's to Many More', 'In Like a Lion (Always Winter)' (which had earlier appeared on the 'Apathetic EP') and 'Boxing Day'. The band also recorded a cute animated video for their take on Leroy Anderson's 'Sleigh Ride'. 'Let It Snow, Baby... Let It Reindeer' really took on the form of an epic release in 2008 when on its reissue a further 3 tracks were added bringing the total to 20 songs in total. The bonus tracks in question were 'Silver Bells', 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' and 'O Holy Night'. Like its predecessor 'Let It Snow, Baby... Let It Reindeer' offers plenty of smiles such as on closing track 'Good King ??????' which is dedicated to all those in the world (98%) who cannot spell "Wenceslas".
With such an extensive Christmas catalogue to their name it is no wonder that Relient K are popular over the holidays and in 2008 they appeared on the Jay Leno show with actor Tom Wilson for a fullsome performance of 'Sleigh Ride'. They also joined Tobymac on the Winter Wonder Slam Tour in both 2008 and 2009 wherein much of their Christmas material made its presence felt.Author: Kevin
