The Whispers Could Be Christmas Music's Best Kept Secret

When you think of the bands with genuine staying power you generally think of acts like the Rolling Stones, the Eagles and Aerosmith but for those monoliths there is the same number of acts that don’t have the profile but see fit to prolong a long and glorious career. R&B vocal group The Whispers are one such who despite multiple line-up changes throughout the decades remain a vibrant force despite forming way back in 1964. The LA band’s first foray into the Christmas market would not arrive until a decade and a half into their career and 1979’s ‘Happy Holiday’s To You’ was certainly redolent of the disco craze that was sweeping the globe at the time. No more so than the frenetic opener and standout track ‘Funky Christmas’ which really demands Travolta like moves and a pair of well ironed bell-bottoms to appreciate its groove. This original was written by the band’s main songwriter Nicholas Caldwell who also penned several other tracks on ‘Happy Holidays To You’. Elsewhere there are covers of well-known tracks like ‘White Christmas’, ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ and ‘The Christmas Song’ which are all special in their own way. The most ear catching of these is ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ which is stripped of much of its scattershot energy and instead turned into a classy and smooth lounge ballad.

‘Happy Holidays To You’ really set the bar high for the Whispers festive output so it comes as no surprise that its follow up in 1994 ‘Christmas Moments’ was slightly disappointing. For some reason it has aged far worse than its predecessor (especially Caldwell’s slightly stodgy original ‘Mrs. Christmas’) but despite this there are still some memorable moments. Chief amongst them is the closing track ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ which has the Whispers harmonising like a mature boy band of the day. ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ is also worth a mention because it is dispatched in such a reverential way, a completely honest reading of this old classic.

If trawling through a couple of Christmas records is too much for you then you should check out the 2010 compilation ‘Christmas With The Whispers’ which gathers the best tracks from ‘Happy Holidays To You’ and ‘Christmas Moments’ on one release. This band deserves to be included on your seasonal mixtapes each December.
