Have Yourself A Furry Little Christmas

We’ve always cited the genius of Mike Batt when out in company, not because he wrote ‘Bright Eyes’ as sung by Art Garfunkel but for all the classic tunes he bestowed upon the Wombles of Wimbledon Common. Now that might seem about the daftest comment ever made but have you heard their songs with those rich melodic streaks, and all from the mouths of several furry creatures created for children’s TV? Yep it was probably because we were young and naïve but ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’ was the sound of Christmas and as soon as the needle hit the groove on that 45 it was time to light up the tree. The Wombles released 2 Christmas albums, ‘The Wombles Christmas Party’ in 1976 and ‘The Wombles Christmas Album’ in 1983, and between them they clocked up just one official Christmas song and for each it was ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’. But what a joy it was, with that giant saxophone riff and a bass line to rival the Police’s ‘Every Breath You Take’. And don’t forget the vocal harmonies which Mike Batt was a master at deploying. An utter joy for kids of every age and it is so good to see 'Wombling Merry Christmas' enjoy a resurgence of late. It was even covered by an indie pop band from Idaho called the Very Most in 2011!
