TobyMAC's Christmas In Diverse City: We're Loving It!

TobyMac is a Christian rapper/hip-hop artist who started his musical career in DC Talk (a Christmas free zone unfortunately) before embarking on a solo career in 2001. His festive forays had begun the previous year, however, as he teamed up with a country girl group named Shedaisy on their Christmas album 'Brand New Year'. Toby's (McKeehan) contribution arrived on a medley of traditional favourites 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing/Carol of the Bells’. Quite soon after going it alone Toby released a Christmas single called 'This Christmas'. This 2002 release contained a commendable rendition of 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and an original called 'This Christmas' which borrowed heavily from 'Joy To The World' in a triumphant chorus that included vocals from TobyMac's own son Truett.

In 2011 'Christmas in Diverse City' became TobyMac's debut Christmas album and was chock-full of collaborations with the likes of Owl City, Jamie Grace and Leigh Nash (the latter on the bright and bubbly opener ‘Christmas This Year’). Over 13-tracks Toby spread his festive gaze over an equal number of secular and religious tracks, mixing old time favourites like 'The First Noel' and 'Little Drummer Boy' (giving it a surprising dubstep overhaul) with new or lesser known numbers such as 'Birth of Love' and 'It Snowed'. For the most part Toby was centre stage but as the album progress he took a backseat role with other members of his Diverse City crew taking over. While this may have proved a disappointment for his many fans the standard is uniformly good throughout 'Christmas in Diverse City'.

TobyMac's Christmas album has an upbeat feel to it like much of his back catalogue with a fresh and vibrant mix of hip-hop, R&B and soul introducing new angles to seasonal standards. You can pick up on the effort that went into 'Christmas in Diverse City' such is the production quality and tiny details in the sound that give songs such as 'Angels We Have Heard on High' and 'What Child Is This?' added nuances. TobyMac followed up his own Christmas LP with a contribution to the 2013 animated movie 'Veggie Tales: Merry Larry and the Light of Christmas'. He and fellow Christmas band Owl City sang on the beat infused 'Light of Christmas' with plenty of rap moments amongst the glow stick antics. Just perfect tinder to kick start any Christmas celebration.
