Christmas Music Playlists with Walter Brennan Songs
For Those Sick Of Contemporary Christmas Music Here Is A Walternative
There are a great many artists on Yuleplay that are held in the highest regards by our good selves, none more so than the great actor/storyteller Walter Brennan. Brennan is best known for being the first actor to win 3 academy awards, all of which were won for best supporting actor roles in the 1930's and 1940's. He took to the recording studio quite late in his career with his first album, 'Stories of Mark Twain', appearing in the mid-fifties.
It would be 1962 before Walter convened to the fireside for his ''Twas The Night Before Christmas...Back Home' LP, which turned out to be a masterful exercise in yuletide storytelling. With his home cooked tales which were nearly always dispatched using spoken word, a deep sense of Americana in the music this is a classic example of how Christmas albums used to sound. Not only that but Brennan's themes focus on the simpler things such as being away from loved ones or pining for those who have passed away over the holidays rather than something more materialistic. Amongst the originals and little known Christmas songs, such as ‘Old Time Christmas Stories’ and ‘Just Three Letters For Christmas’ are a scattering of standards such as ‘Silent Night’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’, with the haunting backing vocals adding a distinctly hallowed feel to proceedings. One of the main singles from the album 'White Christmas' was released as a single in 1964 and while it had vestiges of Bing’s original Walt saw fit to add plenty of spoken word asides to give it his unique bent.
Given that it was originally released in the early sixties ''Twas The Night Before Christmas...Back Home' originally came out on vinyl and while the CD reissue (it can often be found packaged with Brennan's non-seasonal 'Old River' album) is no match for the warm inviting sound of a 33rpm it is still satisfying that such a treasure has not been lost. A bona fide treat for his longstanding fans arrived in 2013 when a reissue called ‘Cuddly Christmas’ included all the pops and hiss of the original vinyl release.Author: Kevin
