Music To Make You Wanna Dance With Somebody

Factfile - Whitney Houston
  • Her gospel version of Do You Hear What I Hear? featured on the charity compilation A Very Special Christmas and subsequently as a b-side to I Will Always Love You.
  • Houston starred in the 1996 movie The Preacher's Wife and also recorded 2 holiday songs for the soundtrack: Who Would Imagine A King, along with her cover of Joy To The World. The soundtrack sold > 8m copies.
  • She released her Christmas album One Wish: The Holiday Album in 2003. The 11 songs included the 2 from The Preacher's Wife soundtrack.

One of the greatest singers of our time Whitney Houston had a voice that was made for Christmas but her attention did not fully switch to the season until relatively late in her career. She did make some festive stops along the way however, the first of which arrived in 1987 when Houston recorded a song for the inaugural ‘A Very Special Christmas’ charity compilation. Her gospel version of ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ with a full choir showcased a unique voice that would sell millions of records. Oddly enough and despite its greatness ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ would not feature on Houston’s later Christmas album but still found its way onto the b-side of her biggest ever single ‘I Will Always Love You’.

It would be 9 years later before Whitney Houston recorded another Christmas song and once again it was for a non-Whitney project. 1996’s ‘The Preacher's Wife’ was a successful movie that spawned a soundtrack that would sell more than 8 million copies. As well as starring in the film Houston recorded all of its gospel fused songs including 2 Christmas numbers, an original called ‘Who Would Imagine A King’ and a cover of ‘Joy To The World’. The former was an orchestral joy with vocals from Houston that exposed her inner child. Her reworking of ‘Joy To The World’ was never less than interesting, quiet and understated one minute and full blown gospel wigout the next.

Whitney Houston’s defining Christmas statement would arrive in 2003 when she released a full length Christmas album called ‘One Wish: The Holiday Album’. This 11 track LP included the 2 Christmas songs which had earlier appeared on ‘The Preachers Wife’ soundtrack and a pleasant mix of secular and religious tracks. Highlights included her breathless cover of Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song’, single and title track ‘One Wish (For Christmas) which proved a real tearjerker, a magnetic retelling of ‘O Come O Come Emanuel’ and the album’s true highlight ‘Cantique de Nöel (O Holy Night)’ which had a spectral quality all of its own. Also notable was an acoustic beat filled version of ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ that Houston recorded with her daughter Bobbi Kristina.

If I had one wish for Christmas
There would be joy
And peace here on earth
If I had one wish for Christmas
this year, We would all come together as one...
