Most of these Christmas songs have been taken from Broadway musicals/movie adaptions that haven’t had the holidays as their central theme but that hasn’t lessened their impact. Who could forget Judy Garland’s heartbreaking turn in the Christmas scene in ‘Meet Me In St. Louis’ where she softly comforted her little sister on her family’s move away from beloved city just before Christmas. Dolly Parton’s ‘Hard Candy Christmas’ (sang here by the cast from the Broadway incarnation) was equally a bit part in a story that was far removed from traditional Christmas persuasions. For something a little more sanitised there is always children’s favourite ‘A New Deal For Christmas’ from ‘Annie’.
For those who prefer the pure unexpurgated Broadway Christmas song experience it is hard to beat ‘White Christmas’ from the movie of the same name. With Bing himself helping out on vocal duties and Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye singing/clowning it made for a spectacular feast for both the eyes and ears. Given the Hollywood treatment it is both of its time and a timeless piece of light entertainment that still enjoys multiple TV reruns each new December.
