If ever you wanted a release valve from the happy-clappy Christmas songs as showcased by Mariah, Bing and Dino then this playlist of alt country Christmas songs should do the trick. Not that it is all down in the mouth but country music holds to its bosom a clear mandate for melancholy, regret and a certain pining for the past. Neko Case broadens the palette even further however with a version of 'Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis' which is decidedly not for little ears. Caitlin Rose is similarly downbeat on 'You Never Come Home For Christmas' but like Neko Case before her manages t offer plenty of dramatic tension which Christmas songs so often dispense with.
For those who have wandered to this page unknowingly and are intent on having the traditional festive soundtrack there is still much to enjoy. The Kopecky Family Band may have altered 'Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!' to their own likeness but it still retains its identity while Willie Nelson adds more grit to 'Silent Night' than a cavalcade of road gritters on an icy road could ever hope to manage. For those looking for a more independent and newer bent Ryan Adams' 'Hey Parker, It's Christmas' proves that they do still write Christmas classics today. Incidentally Sufjan Stevens did a mighty fine revision of Adams' Christmas numbers as part of his yearly ode to the season which is worth checking out.
