The thing that often gets lost amongst the hubbub and garishly overdone Christmas songs is that there is a huge audience out there that like to come at it much like they would for the rest of year. And fans of smooth ballads should never feel short changed given the extent and variety of the Christmas ballads on this playlist. Ballads are often thoughtful affairs and Gloria Estefan underscores this point through her tender ‘Christmas Through Your Eyes’. Celine Dion is a master of the ballad and is no stranger to festive material so her uptempo ‘Christmas Eve’ is a wonderful surprise.
If you like your Christmas ballads to be a little more on the classic side then Judy Garland’s ‘Have Yourself A Merry Christmas’ should fit the bill. Taken from the soundtrack to ‘Meet Me In St. Louis’ Garland turned in a performance that came close to upstaging her ‘Over The Rainbow’ performance on ‘The Wizard of Oz’. From the moment the strain of those strings hove into earshot you should know you are in the presence of greatness and Nat King Cole’s vocals are shortly on their way. ‘The Christmas Song’ is as perfect an encapsulation of the traditional Christmas sound as Bing’s ‘White Christmas’ and for most of us any Christmas without this ballad by our side vastly diminishes the spirit of the season.
Hard to believe but Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘The Secret of Christmas’ was initially overlooked for her 1960 album ‘Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas’ and was only reinstated on a 2002 reissue. As beguiling a Christmas as your ever likely to hear this is Christmas ballad par excellence.
