You may believe that Christmas music is a happy, fluffy and joyful rhapsody but you'd be surprised at the amount of material that focuses on the underbelly of the season. For today's playlist however we are concentrating on a set of uplifting Christmas songs that will ensure that the high spirits of the season never flag. As you will discover there are few surprises with each of these songs long established as festive anthems with the ability to sprinkle the magic of the season to all listeners.
Burl Ives' 'Holly Jolly Christmas' is perhaps the best traditional example of how to spend your holidays. It helps that Burl himself looks like Santa but he fills his most famous song with such unbridled joy that even non Christmas believers will surely be smitten. Perry Como, with able help from backing group the Fontaine Sisters, recorded the definitive version of 'It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas' which herald in the festivities each year. Watch for the signs that he sings about throughout to ensure you can adequately prepare yourself for 12 days of wonder and joy. And if Andy’s words aren’t enough then Bing can truly spell it out for you on 'Christmas Is A-Comin'.
Moving closer to contemporary times we have Paul McCartney's tinsel fuelled 'Wonderful Christmastime' which despite sounding as old as it is (1979) remains a pillar of Christmas gaiety each year. Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is similarly inclined with a robust happiness infiltrating every note. You can try and be downhearted with this playlist on your speakers but you'll fail miserably. We hope that you and yours can have an uplifting Christmas this year and every year.
