You only have to listen to Joni Mitchell's 'River' or Gordon Lightfoot's 'Song For A Winter's Night' to understand how affecting folk songs can be around Christmas time. And the tradition of great folk readings of old festive classics as well as new folk Christmas material is one that continues in modern times as evidenced by this playlist of contemporary folk songs for the season. The great beauty of this collection is how much you will discover since many of these songs hardly breach the Christmas song factories that are radio stations each December (which are often confined to the same dozen or so songs each year).
So why not branch out over the holidays with something altogether different like John Prine's 'Christmas In Prison' which is something most of us will thankfully never experience but for other it is an all too real fact of life. And while these songs may lean heavily on the serious side of the season there are moments of brightness in the shape of the religious 'Early On One Christmas Morn' by Bruce Cockburn, the chipper 'Christmas Bells' by John Gorka and the delightful 'We're Going To Get Our Christmas Tree' from Tom Paxton. All of these themes may be simple but it pays to sometimes strip back from all the excess and just focus on the more important things over the 12 days.
