This playlist is to be taken liberally beside a roaring open fire. For it is there that traditional folk Christmas songs are most at home. Not that all of these festive ditties are particularly homely given the theme of Woody Guthrie's '1913 Massacre'. What Christmas song is this I hear you roar, well the true story on which it is based might well be horrific but the event itself took place on Christmas Eve 1913. Guthrie recorded the song in 1941 and it chronicled the deaths of Michigan copper miners and their families in what were very suspicious circumstances during a Christmas party.

Ok, Guthrie and his sorry tale may not have been the best way to get you in the party mood but don't be put off as our collection of traditional folk Christmas songs has plenty to warm the cockles of your heart. And who better to do so than one of the most successful trios of the sixties Peter, Paul & Mary. Their 'Light One Candle' is a delight of sweet harmonies and reflection. You'll also find a very different Burl Ives from what you're used to. Before Grandfather Christmas assumed the title he was a noted folk musician and his 'The Seven Joys of Mary' is a startling account of his talent for delivering a story within the confines of a glorious piece of music.
