For a pure distillation of an artist that was capable of perfect Christian country Christmas songs you don’t have to look to far beyond Johnny Cash. And this from a man who was often an outlaw, a cowboy from the wrong side and who had a strong affiliation for those for whom incarceration was a way of life. When it came to Christmas however Cash showed his strong family bonds, his genuine faith and a spiritual connection with the season. So his ‘King of Love’ is a song of devotion to that 2000 year old event. Another country great Kenny Rodgers is similarly awestruck by the nativity on his ‘Pretty Little Baby Child’ which was taken from his 2002 holiday album ‘The Gift’. Grammy award winner Randy Travis adds his contribution to the list of versions of ‘Angels We Have Heard On High’ and while the carol is often delivered by high pitched choirs it sounds altogether soothing to hear the country baritone offer his gentle reading.
