If ever there was a genre that was suited to Christmas it is gospel music. With a natural berth inside the house of god it means that the best known Christmas carols easily make the smooth transition to a gospel setting. So the Campbell sisters and their faithful vehicle Mary Mary give ‘The First Noel’ a reverential reworking with their strong vocals at the core. This is epic storytelling that has a genuine biblical feel such are the rich dynamics. Of course popular gospel Christmas songs do not necessarily have to be carols as evidenced by John P. Kee’s ‘No Christmas Without You’ which may suffer owing to its dated feel but when the New Life Community Choir kick in this turns into the freshest and most vibrant gospel celebration imaginable.
