At Yuleplay we're all about taking you down snow covered musical side roads to alleviate the inevitable burn out from hearing the same-auld Christmas songs each year. And an alternative santamental playlist is no exception as it ploughs a fertile field of lesser known artists for rich festive goodness. You may have heard of several of the acts before such as Blink-182, Tim Minchin and Pearl Jam but did you ever figure that they'd get all weak at the knees and open to the idea of donning the red suit and singing the praises of the season?
The real joy of course is discovering new bands and what they have to offer. Like Beck and his quirky 'Little Drummachine Boy', a play on one of the most famous Christmas songs of all time. Mogwai's instrumental 'The Christmas Song' might be too much for some as it is dark, long and a little gloomy but then to counter that there is always Reuben's 'Christmas Is Awesome'. Our favourite of the whole lot however comes from folk hero Sufjan Stevens who has taken it upon himself to rewrite the Christmas songbook all by himself. With close to a hundred Christmas songs to his name his 'Did I Make You Cry On Christmas Day? (Well, You Deserved It!)' should be a lovely introduction to his epic festive body of work.
