While most of the world would see fit to pick the same dozen Christmas songs we thought we’d work a little harder on putting together a Christmas playlist that sounds a lot like Christmas but is not particularly obvious. Instead this playlist is filled with little festive gems that you might not have heard of before but are still imbued with the warm glow of the season. And we couldn’t exclude Ray Conniff’s ‘Christmas Bride’ from any list such as this because it succeeds in being all seasonal things to all people. Old school it may be but when Conniff sings he emotes about the feelings that only the season of goodwill can conjure. Much closer to contemporary times we have Scotland Laurie Anderson’s shy and unassuming ‘Merry Christmas From Scotland (Lulled With A Stiff Drink)’ which approximates the sound of softly falling snow. We’d also like to draw your attention to a hopelessly reserved James Brown (it took us by surprise too!) on ‘Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay’ which was included on his Christmas laced ‘Hey America album. Not that you think it but Brown was quite the Christmas fan and his snow flecked albums, while relatively unheralded, are to a man both joyful and triumphant.
