New Year songs will never have the graviatas of Christmas counterparts but they are such an integral part of the 12 Days that we've decided to celebrate them with their very own playlist. And when you look into it there is surprising variety on offer. You'll probably be most familiar with ABBA's 'Happy New Year' who play it simple in their joyous embracing of the arrival of the New Year. Considering this most famous of Swedish bands never recorded a Christmas song we are more than happy to give 'Happy New Year' an airing over the Christmas season.
As the New Year often ushers in renewal, resolutions and a chance to start all over again it is not surprising that New Years songs are a hopeful bunch. Like U2’s anthemic ‘New Year’s Day’ with its message of redemption at the start of another 365 days. That and a promo video filled with snow and horses makes for a potent mix. Slightly more traditional is Bing Crosby’s ‘Let's Start The New Year Right’ from 1954. You’ll hear the crackers, whistle and pops from this vinyl recording but isn’t it a pleasure to look forward by listening to something from way back.
Before we reach New Year's Day however there is the small matter of New Year's Eve, the last official party occasion of the Christmas season. And as you'd expect Happy New Year songs are almost universally lively and full of expectation. Whether that excitement is quite so alluring the following headache-filled-morning is open to question though. Let’s start the party rolling with B.B. King’s big and beautiful blues express ‘Bringing A Brand New Year’, get our hands in the air with Slade’s ‘Here's To (The New Year)’ and end things perfectly with Jo Ann Campbell’s 1959 classic ‘Happy New Year Baby’ which was written by Neil Sedaka.
And all that without an Auld Lang Syne in sight!
